Digital Media/Web Developer
Gilcrease Museum
 

POSITION SUMMARY

This position serves as the primary developer for Gilcrease Museum¹s web,
digitization, digital asset management, and media projects.  It also
supports web projects for the
Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The incumbent will work on a
variety of web projects including oversight of the creation and
integration of a
robust, database-driven collections research site as a web-based media
presentation of the museum and archive collections.  This position is part
of the University of
Tulsa Information Technology department and reports to the Chief IT
Services
Officer.  It is embedded in the Gilcrease Museum with a service reporting
line to the Head of Collections Digitization.

 
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:
·     
Supports, plans, and develops web and digital media projects
ranging from applications within the Gilcrease Museum¹s website to the
digital
asset management system.
·     
Serves as the primary technical resource for digital
development within the Museum and HCAR.
·     
Works collaboratively with the University of Tulsa web
services areas to ensure standards in marketing and branding.
·     
Manages and monitors web analytics and site performance
data for the Museum.
·     
Works with and becomes skilled in the administration of museum
specific software including Gallery Systems TMS museum collections
management system
and Piction digital image management system.
·     
Develops and integrates database-driven, dynamic site for
collections web presentation of digital assets.
·     
Follows best practices in documentation, work flow, and
version control.
·     
Follows best practices for web implementation: W3C
standards  http://www.w3.org/standards/
·     
Remains current on museum digital technology and
researches emerging technology, including Linked Open Data for the
semantic web.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
·     
Bachelor¹s degree in Computer Science, Management
Information Systems, or related technical field.  Experience and
demonstrated knowledge can be
substituted for the degree.
·     
Two to four years¹ experience in digital technologies and
user experience design.
·     
Experience with or demonstrated interest in large museum
collection digitization efforts and the resulting online research site.
·     
Strong web development skills including HTML5, CSS, PHP,
and JavaScript.
·     
Strong skills in importing, exporting and querying
databases including transforming data from one format or structure to
another
(i.e. XML, LOD, csv, JSON)
·     
Experience with web CMS systems such as Word Press and Drupal for
dynamic, database-driven research sites.
·     
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as
part of a project team.
·     
Effective oral and written communication skills to a
variety of audiences including non-technical staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
·     
Master¹s degree in Computer Science, MIS, Museum
Management, or related field.
·     
Previous experience in a museum especially in digitization projects.
·     
Previous experience with Gallery Systems and Piction.
·     
Previous experience with Word Press.

Gilcrease Museum, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is one of the country's
finest facilities for the preservation and study of American art and
history.
The museum houses the world's largest and most comprehensive
Collection of Western American art and artifacts, including an unparalleled
Collection of Native American art and artifacts.
 

The new Helmerich Center for American Research on the museum's
Campus houses the vast archival collection that Thomas Gilcrease amassed.
The collection includes more than 100,000 items that chronical this
history ­
from the Spanish exploration and conquest of the Western Hemisphere, to the
founding of democracy in the United States, to the American Indian
attempts to
maintain home territories during the 19th century.
 

Western artists for which Gilcrease is renowned include Albert Bierstadt,
William M. Cary, George Catlin, Woody Crumbo, William R. Leigh, Alfred
Jacob Miller, Thomas Moran, Frederic Remington (including 18 of his 22
bronzes), Charles M. Russell, Olaf Seltzer, Joseph H. Sharp, Willard Stone,
And Charles Banks Wilson.
 

Themed gardens have been developed on 23 of the museum's 460 acres. The
Restaurant at
Gilcrease is excellent. Gilcrease Museum is owned by the City of Tulsa,
which
has partnered with The University of Tulsa to steward the museum into a new
Era.

 
Tulsa is a vibrant, mid-sized city of rich music and cultural traditions
located in
green country, Northeastern Oklahoma, within a landscape of rolling hills
and
rivers. It is part of the emerging cultural corridor stretching between
Crystal
Bridges in Bentonville, Arkansas to Gilcrease Museum and the National
Cowboy
& Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Other cultural attractions in
Tulsa include: Philbrook Museum, Woody Guthrie Museum, Tulsa Opera, Tulsa
Ballet, Cain¹s ballroom, Route 66, art deco architecture and the Brady
Street
Arts District downtown.
