CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Workshop Curriculum Writer
Museum Computer Network
Project Fee: $3,500
Deadline for application: September 15, 2000
Open to MCN Members

The Museum Computer Network, a non-profit, membership association of
cultural heritage information professionals, seeks a curriculum writer
to develop a one-day workshop addressing the fundamental issues involved
in selecting a collection information system and the challenges of
knowledge management in a museum environment. The workshop is intended
for cultural heritage professionals charged with the responsibility of
selecting and implementing a technology-based collection information
solution; it will be particularly suited to those who find themselves
faced with this task for the first time. MCN will retain all rights to
the intellectual property associated with this workshop and will be able
to present the workshop at its discretion.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven track record in
research and curriculum development. Preference will be given to those
applicants who have real-world experience with the issues and problems
associated with planning and implementing a system. Applicants should
also design the workshop so that it can be taught at relatively low cost
in a variety of settings i.e. there should not be extensive technology
requirements.

It is important that the workshop be designed to be very interactive;
that is, to include a variety of hands-on activities, exercises,
discussion, and interactions between students and instructor(s). This is
not to be a straight lecture course, although it will have some lecture
segments. The final product of this project will be a teacher's guide
and student workbook. The teacher's guide will include a detailed
outline and notes on each of the topics covered, runtime version of
slide show (preferably using PowerPoint) provided on diskette, masters
for slide presentations, and clearly articulated student exercises and
activities. The student workbook will contain condensed versions of the
instructors notes i.e. key points of the topics covered, copies of the
slides, and exercises and activities.

The workshop should cover the following topics:

1) Why automate

2) The role of standards

3) Project planning: getting started

4) Setting information goals

5) System requirements and criteria

6) Selecting the system

7) Implementation

Applications will be judged on the qualifications and experience of the
applicant, the clarity and completeness of the proposed outline, the
effectiveness of the sample illustration, exercise and activity,
appropriateness of content for the intended audience, and feasibility of
overall design to the one-day format of the workshop. The MCN
Professional Education Committee, which is overseeing this project, will
review all applications, check references, interview prospective
candidates via conference call, and recommend the best candidate to the
Board of Directors.

A schedule for periodic review (no fewer than 2 drafts) of the
developing workshop by the Professional Education Committee will be
defined with the successful candidate. This project must be completed no
longer than 4 months from the signing of the initial contract

All applicants are asked to submit:
· a cover letter
· resume, three references
· a detailed outline of the topics covered in the workshop
· a one-page sample narrative describing a single issue involved in
selecting a collection management system, along with a visual
illustration, activity, or exercise which would further clarify the
issue for a student.

All application documents must be presented web-ready, either as HTML
files or pdf files. Please submit all application materials to
[email protected]
