Hello, fellow MCN list subscribers:
The Standards SIG is seeking presenters for CIMI-MCN 2001 (the
general Call for Participation is at
http://www.mcn.edu/mcn2001/index.htm).
We're open to ideas for standards panel topics and are especially
interested in hearing from people using standards in ways relevant to
this year's conference themes. Two such possibilities are:
1. Standards as an invisible foundation for visitor experiences
---------------------------------------------------------------
Since standards underlie many virtual experiences for museum
visitors, there's rich potential for talking about how such
experiences can be supported behind the scenes by standards in
database back-ends for kiosks, formats for streaming media, and so
on. By making public resources more efficient to create and maintain,
using standards can make them more feasible to implement at all.
2. Standards-based wireless access to collections information
-------------------------------------------------------------
The theme of "Using portable devices to access archives and
multimedia" raises interesting standards issues. Are you working to
develop standards-based ways to provide collections metadata to
wireless devices in galleries (to visitor PDAs?), storage areas (for
inventory or location-finding?), or elsewhere? A panel or roundtable
on such projects could be fascinating.
I encourage anyone interested in participating in--or suggesting
other prospective presenters for--panels on these or other standards
topics to contact me at <[email protected]>. Thanks!
Rob Lancefield
