Apologies for cross-postings! Where Wonder Meets Wisdom: University of Alberta Museums Launch Virtual Museum Web Site
The University of Alberta Museums announces the launch of the new virtual museum web site, 24 October 2001 at www.museums.ualberta.ca. The site provides a virtual gateway into the University's 17 million objects and specimens for all audiences -- from the curious child to the serious scholar. It provides access to research information, an integral feature of the University's museums and collections, and a range of resources for use in the classroom, the lab, or for the insatiably curious. The stories and information are derived from research conducted by faculty, staff and students at the University of Alberta on museum objects and specimens, made accessible through different media. The virtual visitor can manipulate objects in 3D; take behind-the-scenes virtual tours of museums, collections and research facilities; search databases of art, fossils and insects; "swim through" a reconstruction of a 410 million-year-old locality to see what the earliest lifeforms were; or unwrap the mysteries of a 2000-year-old mummy. The University of Alberta has many types of museums and collections for a variety of teaching, research and community outreach purposes. Located throughout campus, these include teaching collections in classrooms, laboratories with research collections, exhibition spaces and placed artwork. The web site is the perfect medium for providing the virtual visitor with a wealth of information, instruction and entertainment in one location. This is the first phase of development, with sections to be developed, added and updated on an ongoing basis. We invite you to visit our new site and explore! Try out the features and let us know what you think -- we welcome your feedback (just click "feedback" on the home page!) as this will be an evolving site of information.
