The California Digital Library Digital Image Specifications provide guidelines for creating digital images that can be re- purposed across print, fixed and network media.
The specifications dictate that: all thumbnails should be 150 pixels along the longest edge; all derivative files should be in JPEG (Joint  Photographic Experts Group) or GIF (Graphics Interchange Format). These were referenced in Rick Rinehart's article for Spectra, Spring 2001.

We are following these guidelines in our current revision of our prototype website http://digimuse.cis.drexel.edu

Now that it is apparently okay to post thumbnails for reference, if what I understand is true following Kelley v Ariba that is, can anyone point to an agreed-upon definition of what constitutes a thumbnail image?  And I sure hope its not something like 100 x 100, because that's hardly enough to give reference to an eight foot canvas.
