Hello, everyone:

An open forum for discussion of the Framework of Guidance for Building Good Digital Collections, issued in draft form by the U.S. Government's Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) as a resource for IMLS grant applicants and federal funding agencies, will be held at the conference of the Museum Computer Network (MCN). Presented by the CIMI Institute, the forum will take place on Wednesday 4 September from 4:00-6:30 p.m. at the MCN conference in Toronto.

The Framework in its current form reflects a great deal of careful thought and effort by members of the Digital Library Forum convened by IMLS, and the draft now is well poised for constructive feedback from the larger community of museum professionals. In response to IMLS's call for comments, the CIMI Institute, the American Association of Museums (AAM) Media and Technology Committee, and MCN are gathering feedback to help enhance the Framework's applicability to a wide range of important and apposite museum resources and projects.

The open forum in Toronto will enable all present to contribute to this process by discussing the Framework in connection with foundational issues that underlie the strategic planning, implementation, and management of networked digital collections in museum settings. A discussion outline summarizes some of these issues (representatives from CIMI, AAM, and MCN are developing comments for IMLS about certain more specific aspects of the draft's content, presentation, and usability; these topics also may arise in the forum if time allows). The outline is on the web at:

We hope to see you and hear your comments in Toronto.
