Hello MCN members,

As of this upcoming conference, I will be retiring from the MCN Board along with two of my colleagues as we end our Board terms. It's been a two-term ride for me, and as I told the other Board members, one of the best experiences of my professional life.

I'm writing to the membership for several reasons. One is just to let you all know that Robin, Greg, and myself will be leaving the Board as of Sept. and 3 new board members will be coming a-board as it were.

The other reason is that it was the MCN membership that placed me on the board twice and allowed me the opportunity to serve this organization for six years. I like to think that some of my Board work will have a lasting impact, particularly regarding the re-vamping of the MCN SIGs. Whatever the impact, I'd like to thank you for that chance.

Lastly, as I leave the Board, it does not mean I leave MCN; I'm just re-joining the general membership. So now when I see you at the conference I won't be wearing that special extra red ribbon on my name-tag, but that just means I'll have more time to go drinking with y'all :)

Moreover, I'd like to encourage all of the membership to participate fully in MCN. Become a SIG member, a SIG Chair, approach a Board member and tell them what you can do and what you'd like to see done (believe me; that's how they suck you in :) It's true, MCN doesn't have the financial or personnel resources to do everything we dream up; and I'm still amazed at how affordable membership is compared to some other cultural groups - but it's really not the income that drives MCN forward; it's the people. I'm also amazed at what MCN does manage to accomplish, and it mostly relies on individuals giving of their time. The reaction I get mainly when attempting to get members to do free work for MCN :)....is that they don't feel qualified, or 'famous' enough (and these are all people with education and experience that is pretty rare anywhere in the world). After having been a board member twice, and President once, I know what it takes. I'm no one special, if I can do it, so can anyone on this list. At one board meeting where we were discussing a possible MCN slogan, I offered "MCN; the cultural heritage group for the rest of us!". I still go by that one; other groups may try to attain the glitz of hollywood, but MCN actually gets the work done. So, really, get involved, you'll be glad you did.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks, and goodbye....until the conference that is.
