Thought this might be interesting following up on the Digital Imaging & Standards SIG double panel at the Toronto conference, ""Archiving Digital Assets for the Long Haul."

Subject:    Digital Document Quarterly 1(3)

This  note announces the availability of the third number of the Digital
Document  Quarterly (DDQ).   DDQ addresses document qualities that can be
managed  automatically or semi-automatically--properties such as integrity,
confidentiality, authenticity, trustworthiness, and so on.  DDQ 1(3)
continues to discuss long-term  digital preservation,  See the series table
of contents at  http://home.pacbell.net/hgladney/ddq.htm

Members of the OAIS Implementers Group should consider  the Use and
Misuse of OAIS  section.  A reference model  is not an architecture.  It
does not  articulate essential specifications for instances of what it
describes.  Archives (in the sense of current  archiving institutions)
might be neither the only nor the best means for their  purported portions
of what's needed.   Focusing on the key requirements of end users will not
broaden the range  of potential solutions, and also simplify the design and
flexibility of  potential archives.

DDQ  1(3) also considers questions about what's worth saving, and suggests
that the  apparent current emphases are too narrow.   Finally, it inquires
into what seems a slow pace towards practical  deployment of digital
preservation services, and suggests that the open research  issues need not
impede implementation work.

DDQ  1(3) is available at http://home.pacbell.net/hgladney/ddq_1_3.htm
