I'm sorry, that last message went out under the wrong heading. Here's the
*real* response to the post "digital collections for profit." I almost
thought about posting this one under the "3D" heading, but as we all know,
2 wrongs still don't make a right. :-)

In terms of a union database trying to play a role in recuperating some of
the costs in digitization through a rights-and-repro service, here's what
we have planned at RLG with Cultural Materials.

RLG Cultural Materials is a collaboratively developed resource consisting
of records linked to digital surrogates (primarily images, but also
including documents, motion, and audio) from the special collections of
contributing libraries, museums, and archives. Right now we have 7 museums
participating in the cultural materials alliance.

At the present, the resource is available for educational and research use
through institutional subscriptions. Plans, however, are well underway for
a service that will be openly accessible on the web. Users will be able to
search and view minimal records (thumbnails and captions) for free. For
those wishing to use the information, an e-commerce module will manage
rights and fees for various uses. The intended audience is both casual web
users and professionals. And, most to the point in terms of the question
at hand, revenue from the transactions will be shared with the
contributors.

Cheers,

Günter

Dear MCNers,

The prospect of generating revenue from digitized museum collections
remains
alluring, especially to administrators looking for new sources of funding.
But I am unaware of any initiatives that have been successful in this
regard. What kinds of discussion are museum professionals engaged in on
this
topic? Or more specifically, what is the current thinking in terms of using
digital collections as a means of generating revenue?

Any insights or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

jim
