QUESTIONNAIRE

1) Does your institution have methods, plans or policies in place re
digital preservation? yes. Can you share that information? We are scanning
our photography collection, as well as documents in our Archives. We are
documenting the artifacts in our collection with both digital and
conventional photographic media, which can be scanned later. Our first
project was in 2001, and have developed guidelines for scanning. My position
has become increasingly more directed toward photography and digital media,
and we are beginning to make headway. We have a new collections management
database which holds a thumbnail of an image. We are just beginning to
import images into it.

2) Is digital preservation an ongoing process at your institution or is it
more a as and when type of approach? We dont yet have a steady workflow,
dont have the staff for that, but I would nevertheless answer YES, it is an
ongoing process.

3) When it comes to collecting digital data what objects do you hold that
may benefit from 360-degree and/or 3D digital capture? We have a number of
interesting objects...a few that come to mind are >>
>>a hand-carved chair from the 1915 Pan-Pacific Expo that has words across
the back, arm sides, etc.
>>a number of early vehicles, such as an early 20th century hearse, a gypsy
wagon, tractors, motorcycles, and other vehicles.
>>a hurdy gurdy, the back of which reveals some of the additional
instruments.

4) How would these types of images be used? We are in the process of
re-designing our website, and these images could be used to highlight pieces
 from our collection.

5) Do you currently capture 360-degree and/or 3D data of your holdings? NO

6) How important is it that a system be able to capture objects of any size
or do your holdings have an "80/20" rule where a larger portion are of a
certain size range? not sure how to answer this.

7) As a percentage how many of your holdings are smaller than a 30 cm cube?
Again, hard to answer this...we have 500,000 objects in our collection, many
of which I'm certaing wouldnt be interesting enough to shoot in 3-d

8) Would it be more important to your institution to capture these types of
digital images for its larger holdings? my guess is that we'd have a range
of sizes of objects to be captured.

9) If this type of system was readily available, would it be more of a
system that an institution would want to have as their own or would it be
more suited to a service that could be booked as and when required (in your
opinion)? I believe we would prefer to use it on a contract basis, not to
purchase it outright.

10) IS there any other comments that you might have re this type of digital
capture system that will be important when considering the capture of the
images? what would the capabilities be in terms of resolution?
