As most people know, NISO Z39.87 Technical Metadata for Digital Still
Images held the status of Draft Standard for Trial Use through December
31, 2003.  The purpose of the Trial Use period was to allow people to
use the draft standard and the accompanying Metadata for Images in XML
(MIX) Schema, http://www.loc.gov/standards/mix/, to measure its ability
to meet the needs of the community before sending it out for official
standards balloting.  Over the past 18 months, many comments about the
draft standard have been received.  Each of the comments will contribute
to the improvement of the data dictionary before it goes for final NISO
Balloting on September 30, 2004.

As NISO Technical Committee AU begins its work to finalize the standard,
we wanted to provide one final opportunity for users of NISO Z39.87
and/or the MIX schema to submit any final comments and potential change
suggestions. If you are using or have used the NISO Z39.87/MIX to help
meet of you institution's metadata needs, please take a moment to read
and possibly respond to the following questions.

1.) Thinking about the file formats you are using when capturing high
end
images: Does the current data dictionary allow you to accurately capture
appropriate technical metadata about those formats?  If not, please
provide examples of the kind of information that should be part of the
Z39.87 data dictionary.

2.) Beyond missing elements, have you experienced any technical problems
with using either the data dictionary or MIX, the XML Schema which
provides a format for interchange and/or storage of the data specified
in the draft standard?

Please send comments to Robin Dale ([email protected]) or Oya
Rieger
([email protected]) NO LATER THAN 5pm PDT, Monday 26 April 2004.

Thank you,

Robin L. Dale and Oya Y. Rieger, co-chairs
on behalf of NISO Technical Committee AU
