FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 6, 2004
Richmond Museum's BC Packer Collection Now Online

The Richmond Museum is pleased to announce that over 750 artifact records and
approximately 600 accompanying digital images of the recently donated BC
Packers Collection are now available for public viewing on the Artefacts Canada
web page www.chin.gc.ca/English/Artefacts_Canada
<http://www.chin.gc.ca/English/Artefacts_Canada> .

BC Packers, for decades one of the largest local employers and an integral part
of the Steveston community, closed its fish processing plant in 1992. The
Imperial Plant was the homeport of BC Packers and the centre of an
international operation. The industrial history of BC packers is inseparable
from the development of Steveston, Richmond and the Province of British
Columbia.

In April 2003, the Richmond Museum received funding from the British Columbia
Arts Council through the BC Digital Collections Program to clean, catalogue and
digitally photograph artifacts collected from the BC Packers, Imperial Plant
Site. Working with Unlimited Digital and professional photographer Ken Mayer,
600 BC Packers artifacts were photographed during the Fall of 2003. These
artifacts include office equipment from the site, BC Packers promotional
material, industrial packing and canning equipment as well as the plant's fire
fighting equipment. During the Winter of 2004, Richmond Museum Curator,
Jennifer Breckon prepared the images for uploading to the Artefacts Canada web
site.

Artefacts Canada is an online resource that contains millions of collection
records and close to 440,000 images from hundreds of museums across the
country. National and international heritage professionals as well as the
general public use the website to research and discover the fascinating world
of Canadian cultural and natural collections.

By having this important collection online, the Richmond Museum hopes to secure
future technology funding through which to showcase its other collections. To
