MCN Website Editor The Museum Computer Network, a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization of professionals dedicated to fostering the cultural aims of museums through the use of computer technologies, seeks a part-time (approximately 5-10 hours per week) editor for its website, www.mcn.edu. The website editor will be responsible for all content on the MCN site, including existing content and the development of new areas of content. MCN is planning a website redesign for the 2005 calendar year, and the Website Editor will be instrumental in the process of identifying and developing new types of content to be offered on www.mcn.edu. This is a unique opportunity to help lead and shape the future of MCN and strengthen its role in the museum and cultural heritage community. The Website Editor reports to the MCN President, and works in close collaboration with key members of the MCN Web Committee and the MCN management company. Responsibilities: * Develop, manage, and oversee all content on the MCN website, www.mcn.edu, and ensure it is accurate and up-to-date * Plan and maintain an editorial calendar for the MCN site * Establish workflows, and prioritize and manage all website updates * Establish editorial styles and conventions, and develop a written style guide * With the help of the MCN Board, solicit and motivate colleagues, peers, and MCN members to develop and write content for the site * Review, edit, and proof all content intended for publication on the MCN site and in other electronic publications * Work with the MCN President and Board to determine editorial strategy and the position of MCN on relevant and timely issues in the field * Develop a website content needs analysis and provide leadership in developing new content for the MCN site * Form strategic partnerships with allied professional organizations to co-develop and share relevant content Training and Skills: * At least three years of experience in the field of computer technologies in museums and cultural institutions * Excellent editorial skills and experience, including copyediting, proofreading, writing, and editing * Basic understanding and knowledge of web technologies, including some familiarity with HTML and CSS * The ability to work with a minimum of supervision and to collaborate with a geographically dispersed team of volunteers * Familiarity with the issues facing today's museum professionals in the areas of developing, managing, standardizing, and delivering museum data and content through digital technologies Compensation: $4,000 honoraria for the 2005 calendar year, to be paid in $1,000 quarterly installments.
