Grant Writing for Preservation and Digitization Projects

A daylong session focused on preparing for and writing grants for digitization and/or preservation projects.  Digitization and preservation grants criteria for funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), are reviewed. Developing proposals for state, local and foundation funding sources will also be addressed. The workshop includes matching your institution’s project with the appropriate funding agency and preparing to write a proposal.  

Outcomes -   
The ability to properly choose and prepare a grant proposal including:

* Evaluating appropriate funding sources;
* Matching project to best funding source;
* Project preparation;
* Preparing a proposal.

Preserving Born Digital Material

As more and more content is created and maintained in digital formats it is important to begin thinking about what to preserve and how to preserve it.  This workshop focuses on the issues of selecting an appropriate preservation strategy for born digital material; the key issues in maintaining materials in a digital format; and the use of national digital archive prototypes and other preservation options.

Outcomes:  
* Understanding of the concepts of content, context, structure, reliability, and authenticity of digital material and how they relate to preservation;

* Understanding of the available options for preservation of born digital material;
* Ability to make appropriate preservation decisions for born digital material.

Metadata is a fundamental element of any digitization project. Designed for non-catalogers, this session focuses on using metadata to facilitate both access to and preservation of digital resources.  Topics include:  review of metadata schema choices; the development of a preservation metadata model; and using XML to store metadata

Outcomes:  
* An understanding of what metadata is and how it facilitates access to and preservation of digital resources;
* An awareness of appropriate metadata schema, including Dublin Core;

* An understanding of current and developing standards;
* The benefits of using metadata and XML together.

A hands-on training session that combines information for both the beginning and experienced user.  Designed to assist institutions in improving staff understanding on how to operate and make the best use of CONTENTdm Software. Workshop exercises include both beginning and advanced features such as:

* creating collections;
* using the compound document wizard;
* metadata & controlled vocabulary implementation;
* maintaining your collections with batch replacement of objects and subset-editing of metadata.
Learning outcome: a basic level understanding of and experience using CONTENTdm utilities with a focus on presenting the most advanced functions. (Appropriate for organizations with CONTENTdm in place and operating)
