Please excuse the cross-posting, we are trying to reach as many people as possible.
The Museum Computer Network has been working closely with its Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to raise the level of engagement, and there have been some recent changes. We (John ffrench and Melissa Fournier) are sending this message to people that been involved with the Intellectual Property Special Interest Group (IP-SIG) or belong to listservs and groups whose membership and areas of interest overlap with the IP-SIG. Collectively, the SIG leaders are working to make their groups more visible and MCN is looking to the SIGs to help steer the direction the conference takes as well as help provide workshops and knowledge opportunities throughout the year (such as their MCN Pro series.) Another change is that SIGs will elect their leaders, and each SIG will have a Chair and a Co-Chair. (We are serving in this capacity at present; SIG elections will be held in late 2015.) To this end Melissa and I would like to reach out to you and find out what you would like to see the IP SIG offer, and secondly, with the call for proposals for MCN 2015 now open, we’d like to see if we can help organize a few session proposals which center on all things Intellectual Property. You can belong to an MCN SIG without having to have an active MCN membership, the hope is that wider affiliation on a grassroots level will increase interest in formal MCN programming such as the annual conference and the special MCN Pro series events. You may also belong to more than one MCN SIG. Below is a link to the MCN IP-SIG webpage along with a link to a simple Google form that will allow you to join the IP-SIG (and will allow us to track who is interested). Mission Statement The Intellectual Property Special Interest Group (IP SIG) is MCN’s central resource for all members interested in the intellectual property issues involved with technology and museums. Its goal is to identify and examine how intellectual property concerns affect the technological delivery and presentation of museum information to all audiences. The SIG offers both a forum for discussing intellectual property issues and a platform for actively developing new ideas and models that address the intellectual property conundrums which affect the museum community. All aspects of intellectual property fall within the SIG’s purview, from traditional legal regimes such as copyright, trademark, patent, and trade secrets, to related areas such as moral, privacy and publicity rights, and the ethical and moral dimensions that often affect decision-making in the intellectual property arena. The SIG pursues its agenda primarily through MCN activities: it develops program sessions, workshops, and events for conferences, and it submits articles and newsbriefs to MCN’s website.
