Curatorial Fellowship in Photography and New Media The James A. Michener Art Museum, a thriving, AAM-accredited art museum located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, is pleased to announce a full-time two-year curatorial fellowship opportunity with a focus in photography. Pending review, the fellowship may be extended for an additional two-year term. The James A. Michener Art Museum collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits American art, and promotes the work of nationally and internationally known Bucks County artists of all eras and creative disciplines. The museum presents exhibitions that explore a variety of artistic expressions and offers diverse educational programs that develop a lifelong involvement in the arts. Given the strong interest in photography among our audiences, as well as the significance of the region's photographers to the development of the media, the Michener Art Museum has also begun to place greater programmatic emphasis on photography. As part of its current strategic plan, the Michener Art Museum has committed to expand this strong foundation to make photography a programmatic emphasis through innovative scholarly exhibitions, programs, and acquisitions. The Curatorial Fellow will play a pivotal role in shaping and implementing the museum's new focus in photography. Primary responsibilities include: * Work with the Chief Curator and other members of the museum's curatorial team to establish the direction, goals, and priorities for photography at the Michener Art Museum. * Organize special exhibitions and secure exhibitions organized by other institutions. * Develop programs and events in conjunction with exhibitions and in collaboration with the education staff that emphasize new ways to provide immersive experiences with photography. * Work in collaboration with Director of Education, New Media & Interpretive Initiatives on projects relating to photography and new media. * Assist in other curatorial department initiatives as assigned. The successful candidate will: * Have an advanced degree in art history, with a specialty in photography (an MA is required); * Have experience organizing compelling installations and exhibitions; * Be committed to the Michener's values and strategic goals; be flexible and able to think creatively; be able to juxtapose ideas and objects in new and unexpected ways, including interdisciplinary approaches; * Be a good listener and strategist; comfortable receiving input from many sources, and able to analyze and formulate disparate information into sound, well-organized goals, strategies, and proposals; * Be organized, meticulous, and capable of working successfully both independently and in collaboration with others, and will possess a demonstrated ability to conduct independent scholarly research. * Be passionately dedicated towards elaborating a balanced and novel program combining both innovation and scholarship that will attract an enthusiastic, expanded audience.
