I agree that a light tent will help and a professional photographer used to photographing Greek pots would also be helpful.
Additional thoughts would be that you may also want to use a polarizing filter which will help somewhat (make sure it's for a digital camera if you are using a digital camera) and although I personally never do it for conservation documentation purposes, for publication I know some people layer photos with the hot spots/reflections in different areas using photoshop and remove the reflections that way then merge the layers into one file. The camera then looks into the tent to photograph the object, and you site your lights outside the walls of the tent. It creates a very even soft lighting effect, all over the object, and removes the reflections and harsh 'catchlight' reflections that you see without such a facility. Studio photographers making images of jewellery use light tents a lot. You can also construct your own temporary version using some bulldog clips and fine muslin or cotton. For publication quality, I really think you'll need some experienced professional help to, at the very least, consult with you on lighting and color management. Also, reflections can be creatively controlled with a combination of Photoshop use and basic lighting techniques. Do you have a good Photoshop tech there?
