With increasing focus on meaningful and mission-aligned collections-based storytelling and providing deep access to our collections information, vigorous, growing, and accessible Digital Collections, collection data, and digital collections content are of key importance. The main responsibilities of the Digital Content Engineer are twofold: 1) creation and implementation of a vision for a robust Digital Collections dataset to enable computational use by THF staff, partners, and other end-users; and 2) day-to-day management of the cross-functional collections digitization process. Works with Historical Resources, other institutional departments, and external partners to create and deploy digitized collections content. Acts as technical go-to person for and facilitates reuse of collections data. Defines, develops, and implements sustainable data production processes for new digital projects and external opportunities. Reports to Manager, Digital Collections and Content. *This is a temporary position, funded by a grant through the end of 2020. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS In conjunction with appropriate THF staff and/or partners, conceives, develops, and implements projects and services that advance use of Digital Collections as data. Researches, maintains awareness, and develops in-depth knowledge of new technology, relevant national standards, and best practices around Digital Collections data and digital content, assessing and integrating these into THF practices where appropriate. Acts as Digital Collections representative on technical and other cross-functional teams, and verifies Digital Collections data meets established standards, technical requirements, and internal and/or external specifications. In conjunction with internal and external stakeholders, determines and implements Digital Collections metadata and multimedia requirements and automated processes to support new and emerging digital products and ongoing digital initiatives. Consistently considers ways to enable open access to and interoperability of Digital Collections data and digital content, and to lower barriers to use. In conjunction with Historical Resources and ITS staff, helps identify and implement content and system changes to extend data model and potential use of digitized collections data. Project manages digitization cross-functional team, process, flow, and schedules using meaningful metrics to reach departmental and institutional goals and priorities. Tracks digitization project status and coordinates cross-functional team/stakeholder exchange of information regarding digitization and Digital Collections data. Champions and implements technical, programmatic, or process-related solutions/optimization opportunities that will lower production costs; reduce delivery timeframes; and/or assist digitization and digital content teams with data ingest, data output, and task automation. Develops avenues to increase digitization production by working with outside partners (grants, for-profit businesses, institutional collaborations, etc.). Establishes and maintains strong working relationships across multiple functional areas and with product stakeholders, vendors, and management. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 2-3 years' demonstrated management experience with digitization, data, or digital content is required. BA degree in information management, data/information science, computer science, or other relevant subject preferred. Demonstrated experience with museum collections management systems or other databases. 2-3 years' experience in scripting and data transform. Individual must have a high customer service focus and general understanding of museum operations. Project management training or substantive experience necessary. Experience with tagged data formats required. Basic understanding of the software development lifecycle and technical understanding of databases and APIs desirable. SPECIAL SKILLS Must have good organizational and communication skills and be attentive to detail. Must have the ability to work independently, as well as working with a variety of people, and excel in a team-based, cross-functional environment. Highly developed problem-solving skills and an ability to manage change in business processes is necessary. Ability to manage multiple priorities and to think and act flexibly to achieve desired outcomes essential. Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to transform ambiguity into clarity required.
