Hi Bridget,

I developed an open source tool while I was at Museum of the Moving Image
called Multicaptions <https://github.com/jasoneppink/multicaptions> that
solved a whole host of problems I had with standard open captions. It's
opt-in, external to the main screen (so it doesn't write on top of the
work), supports as many languages as you want to supply, and the hardware
costs less than an off-the-shelf media player. All the screens in MoMI's
Jim Henson Exhibition gallery have been running it for a couple years now.
