I've seen this a couple of times, but don't know why & haven't had it
happen for ages now.
I don't know if the bug is still there, but changing the expiry settings
of a folder with archived messages was a bad idea, because it deleted
even the archived messages in that folder yet left the entry in the
message list. Attempting to view that message would then do what you
describe, connecting to the news server.
Maybe part of the database is corrupt (don't know how to check for
this). MD2 will load a corrupt prefs file, without any error, & then all
sorts of weird & wonderful stuff can happen to the entire message
database.
