If you enter a group and close it, and then re-enter it on the same day the
flags still show new. It's only when you've looked in a group on a
particular day, and re-entered it on a different day (or collected mail
maybe; not sure which) that the "new" flags change to "unread". It *is*
annoying if you don't have chance to read all the new messages in one
session, but I'd prefer the new messages to change to unread at some point,
and this seems like a fairly sensible way to do it.
