Stereo takes two soundgroups per 11.6ms (left+right), mono takes one per 11.6ms. AFAIK fast mode is done simply by getting the player to interpret mono data as if it were stereo. That means that the left and right channel in fast play mode are not identical. (I don't know for sure that this is the case. It would be an interesting experiment: Does the mono "center of the head" image go away in fast play mode?).
