Valid point MP3 will sound good at higher data rates. But if you are going
to use a higher data rate eg 256Kb/s/stereo program why use MP3? It is far
too complex to be used at higher data rates and there are other algorithms
that would offer similar quality at higher data rates that are very simple
to implement hence cheaper. One good example is ATRAC or even AC3 or how
about MIT-AC or AUPEC. Even MPEG-1 layer 2 will code with fairly good
quality at 192Kb/s/stereo program as used in DAB. AC3 will also do quite a
nice job at 192Kb/s/stereo program despite being quite old. Furthermore AC3
uses significantly less MACs per sample than MPEG-1 layer 3. So I think
MPEG-1 layer 3 is only usefull when used at lower data rates. But truely
good codecs will be here soon I suspect one limiting factor at present are
DSP chips which seem to get better by the day!
