Well I can give two possible reasons, one of which is less likely than the
other, and both may be wrong, but I'll let you know anyway.
1. All recording media are prone to physical defects, and that includes
CD, MD, Tape as well as Vinyl Records. When recording from a record
to an MD, the music goes through the ATRAC compression process,
details of which are available on MDCP. Defects on the record cannot be
processed and result in a similar size area of the MD being likewise
flawed.
Since the music is compressed but the defect cannot be, the result is a
much larger corruption of the music on the recorded MD. Certain hi-fi
component units do have a selectable pre-processing filter (rather like
the MPX filter for recording from VHF FM radio) which virtually eliminates
the effects of defects on records or other large disc based media.
2. All recording media are prone to physical defects, and that includes
CD, MD, Tape as well as Vinyl Records. Because the pickup source
of a record is in physical contact with a spinning disc, and the disc is
not perfectly flat, certain subsonic noises are introduced to the sound
played from the disc. For instance a disc spinning at 33rpm will have a
subsonic component of just over 0.5Hz and harmonics of it. Similarly a
45rpm will have multiples of 0.75Hz.
Since the music is compressed these additional subsonics and their
harmonics require the ATRAC process to compress additional data, less
space is available for the music, causing it's quality to be decreased.
Certain hi-fi component units do have a selectable pre-processing filter
(a "Subsonic" filter) which virtually eliminates the effects of defects on
records or other physical-contact disc based media.
If anyone knows better, you'd better send it to md-l in case anything I
said above was not entirely accurate. I'm only humanoid after all :-P
Cheers,
