I bought a new JE530 a couple of days ago for EUR205.
I tried this out yesterday (and planned to post the results
anyways, so here they are) and it works.

Here's what I did:
I copied a song onto my PC harddisk and used the cool edit demo
software to speed it up before I made a digital recording of it using
my SBlive sound card.

I tried 2x speed (pitch-50%), 4x speed (pitch-75%),
10x speed (pitch-90%) and 20x speed recordings (pitch-95%).

The double speed recording (which would allow more than 5 hours of mono
audio on a MD) sounded not too bad and would be OK for background music.

4x speed produced a result that sounded a lot like AM radio.

At 10x speed you get long wave radio quality and you can still understand
most of
the lyrics. A MD could last a day at this speed!

At 20x speed the lyrics are rather hard to understand.

Afterwards I also tried recording a vinyl album at 45 prm and playing the
recording with pitch-25%. This produced a good result apart from some
lost high frequencies which I realised in a later a<->b comparison.

So, yes, you can use LP mode MDs.

The hard part is to get the machine to play at double speed.
AFAIK you can only get a double speed signal from some "high speed dubbing"
double tape decks - or has anyone seen a double speed CD-player?

I just hope they're going to include the
pitch option into future walkmen releases.

On the topic of the JE530: I can confirm that "TOC cloning" and "Super Undo"
(holding STOP for 10 seconds) work.
