I think what Ralph is trying to say is that making copies of CDs easily, is
a very important factor and possibly the MOST important factor for a lot of
people.

I have no stats to back that up but at the moment I personally know about 10
of my friends who have bought into MD. As far as I am aware not one of them
has or is ever likely to use it for recording live music. They all use it
exclusively for recording CDs/radio/vinyl which is what people use MP3 for
as well. Several of them have taken a look at MP3, didn't like what they
saw (heard?) and went MD anyway.

For you the issue of live recording is the decisive factor. Effectively MD
can and MP3 can't. Fine but if you don't mind me saying so its a bit of a
niche market inwhich the real competition is probably DAT. MP3 doesn't
compete with MD as a live recorder - it competes with MD as a home recorder,
which is arguably a far larger market.

So for me (and it seems Ralph) *THE* decisive factor that makes MP3 utter
pants next to MD is the fact that you can start recording a CD (or whatever)
within 10 seconds of switching it on and pressing a couple of buttons and so
can my Mum. In other words its very easy compared to the hoopla you have to
go through with MP3.

or perhaps the fact that the media is a fraction of the price is the
decisive factor

or that it sounds great and MP3 doesn't,

or that you don't need a computer,

or that you don't need to be a computer geek to use it,

or that in Europe we pay for local calls and MP3 downloads could cost you a
fortune anyway,

or that MDs (players and discs) look cooler

or that ...
