Mark Benjamin asked,
| Just wondering if any of you who own a Sony MDS-JE510, have you ever had a
| disc stuck inside the deck.
Yup.
| If any of you have had similar
| problems please drop the MD List a line - thanks!
I took it in for repair under service contract at Best Buy ... came back,
they'd taken the disc out but not repaired the problem, claiming I hadn't
said anything more than "disc stuck in unit" when I brought it in.
Left it there, told them fix it; they replaced the transport and told me it
was ready. I got it, and it wouldn't save TOCs or even update RAM TOCs: it
wouldn't play back what it had just recorded, and when I wrote a TOC, it
erased the whole disc. (And at the time I had no 520 to recover the contents
with; it was all tracks from my CDs and thing I could rerecord, so I wracked
my brain and remembered twenty-one of the twenty-two tracks. Unable to
remember the last one, I posted here in a panic [or was it the old MD-L?]
asking if someone in metropolitan Chicago had a machine that could clone
TOCs. No response, but several hours later I remembered what the other track
was, so I was able to rerecord the disc.)
They replaced a board and it was finally ready about 2 1/2 months after the
original problem. It had also had the turn-on bug, which was gone (for a
while) once the other two problems were fixed. The turn-on bug returned a
couple months later.
Repair for the turn-on bug lasted barely a month. It returned, this time
with the Protected bug. My brother and I applied Joe Redifer's fix for the
turn-on bug, and it's gone for good, but the Protected bug is worse than
ever. The 510 now sits unused. Maybe when Best Buy gets the new models in,
I'll bring it for its fourth repair and see if they invoke the lemon clause.
Then I'll sell my JE500.
