He didn't deep discharge the battery did he? That could easily reduce the
capacity of a Lithium ion battery quite markedly, as I understand it.
Lithium ion batteries should be recharged whenever possible, and should not
be allowed to go flat (as is recommended for Nickel Cadmiums, which have a
strong memory effect).
