I own an MD that I use every day walking to and from work, and even at 
work.

My PowerBook has around 2GB of MP2's and MP3's (MP2's actually sound a 
lot better in some circumstances, but that's another debate ;-) ) that I 
listen to when travelling. The sound isn't as good, but I can fit a lot 
more music using MP's, and I don't have to carry an extra component and 
discs.

They both have uses, and they really aren't competition for each other, 
at least in my mind.
