===============BEGIN QUOTE=============================================
You know what I really hate? When I make backups of my favourite CDs on
minidiscs, and then accidentally lose those backups in my friends homes. I
then have to make more backups and then they got stolen when I leave them
sitting around. And what do I hate about this? I don't know who should be
prosecuted for what.
==============END QUOTE===============================================

A common-sense onterpretation of the law would allow for one of the reasons
why people make recordings of CDs - to make a copy in case of accidental
loss or (most commonly) theft of your CD.

It's too easy to lend out your favourite CD and then find that it has
disappeared. For example the person has been moving house or going through a
divorce and the CD could get lost in the move. Or you BYO music to a party
and give the music a spin. Suddenly some intoxicated person gets their paws
on the music system and switches discs and while they do so they swipe your
favourite disc. Or you may be renting a room at a local bar for a special
party and a lot of CDs are loaded into a 5-disc carousel CD changer located
on the premises for the purposes of providing music for the party. Here it
is too easy to find that discs could be mislaid -- either still in the
machine, the venue's CD library or another guest's CD library by the time
the night ends.

Simon Mackay
