Well to add some fuel to this discussion of Sharp vs Sony Line outs, I
have the Sharp 702 and use it weekly at a radio station.  I use the
headphones/line out jack to go into a mixer. 

I can say that the volume control and bass/boast controls on the 702 do
affect the output.   If I turn the level up or down, or have the bass
boast on different levels, you can audibly hear the effects. 

So if the definition of line-out is that it will uneffected by volume
controls, then the Sharp 702 does not meet this definition.
