Yes, I bought a Sharp MD-R3 from Onsale.com. I believe it cost US$200.
Lack of space is one reason, I only needed a CD player but bought the
MD-R3 because it's a CD player but has that extra MD recorder! The
MD-R3 fits perfectly where the CD player used to be. Another reason was
price, for the money, it was cheapest unit with coax digital input. My
girlfriend needed a deck with coax input because she wanted to record
MP3's from her computer, and her computer only had coax digital out.
Those reasons coupled with the fact that I also needed a CD player, led
me to the MD-R3.

Yes, that could be the case for some people.
I've never seen the Memorex or Goodmans unit in the US though, I guess
they're only available in Europe.
