MD: recording safety?

Is it safe to leave a unit in 'record mode' for any amount of time?  I am
using a Sharp 722 to record a bunch of MP3s with different volumes, and I
need to press record to hear the output through the MD headphones.  Is the
record head burning a groove in my disks or is this harmless?  advTHANXance
