Hi,
I just received my new minidisc recorder today and the first recordings
I made with the Sony ecm-ms907 mic were impressive (at least by my
standards). I'm especially pleased as the whole outfit cost less than
$200 ($49.95 for the mic at a local good guys and $199.99 -$50 rebate
for the recorder from cameraworld.com).
I imagine myself using this set up to record ambient sounds while
traveling. I suspect other people have had the same idea, so I have a
few questions:
1. Hiss--I seemed to notice it more when I had the record level at the
maximum of 30 trather han down a few notches at 27 or so. The ambient
street noise in front of my urban San Frnacisco house is well below
overloading even at the maximum record level. I realize that everything
increases when I increase the record level, so am I imagining the hiss
is worse at maximum, or is the internal amplifier noisier?
2. Mics--most of the discussion I've read concerns concert level
recording. Are there better cheap mics than mine for ambient recording?
3. Power--the power supply the unit came with is 120v 60hz. What's the
best set up for traveling? Are international adapters available or
should I get a battery pack? Anybody made there own supplementary
battery pack?
4. TOC error--I know this issue has been well discussed. After reading
many posts, I decided to get a MS702 because:
you can set record levels on the fly
 it was cheap
many people seemed to feel the TOC error was more likely to effect
earlier units (particularly japanese imports)
The error would probably occur before the warranty expired (if it
did occur)
I remember a post saying that the MD-MS702 MK (my unit) was an
improvement over an earlier MS702 version.
After I bought my MS702, Best Buy advertised the MT15s for $199. Would
it be a safer, more reliable choice?
Thanks in advance for your opinions,
