I believe this is known as "blinding with Science". I'm glad you can do hard
sums, Ralph, but I think it would have been sufficient to say:

If you take a pure sinewave at some frequency, to change the waveform into
some more squiggly shape, you have to add harmonics with at least twice the
frequency. If these harmonics lie outside the passband between source and
brain (whether in hardware or ear), you won't be able to hear them, so you
won't be able to tell the difference.
