Though I must admit, that has taken me by surprise, it still doesn't prove
useful on full component decks. It's a nice thing to have with portables but
I need something for my JA30ES.

Not quite true Tony. Look at these two very interesting projects for
transferring titels from your computer.
Not via the S/PDIF, but also not infra-red or S-link.
With the Sony project you get a bonus: syncro recording directly from Winamp
with correct trackmarks and transferring of titles/artist!
