I had bad experiences with my 701 and the service mode: Curious
as I am, I tried the auto-adjustment features (AUTO1 and AUTO2),
which - I got this information later - should only be used with
special adjustment mds.
Although not really damaged, the unit shows some annoying faults:
the movement of the head is much slower and louder than before, and
it frequently has reading problems (causing interruptions in the
music) which fortunately can be cured by doing the auto-adjust
method again. (Additionaly, I observed that the lens of my 701
collects lots of dust and fluff because there seems to be some
lubricant/glue around the lens; I often have to blow the dirt
away from the lens to make it work)
All in all, I would recommend to stay away from the test modes. So
far, nothing really usefull has been discovered in the menus and
the adjustments are best left at their factory values...
