I'm guilty of owning four premastered MDs, for these reasons:

1-2. The first day I bought an MD unit, I wanted to try it out, but for me
that meant playing something before trying to reocrd on it (what if it
sounded horrid?) and keeping the 60-minute blank included with it wrapped and
unused so that I could return the unit if I didn't like it. So that meant
trying a premastered MD first. Looking around Circuit City, I found an album
I wanted for about $2 more than the CD version (worth the extra for the
learning experience, I figured) and another premastered MD with a track I
wanted that I had not found on CD. Also, in order to try recording without
ruining the returnability, I bought a blank 74; do not ask what I had to pay
for one in those days.

3-4. A few months later I found a double-disc set at Best Buy for $2 less
than the CD edition, so what the heck, I bought it.

Other than that, well, compression is compression, and the CDs are much
easier to find.
