You need a computer only if you don't already have an SCMS-unlimited CD or MD
as your seed and you have to make one on your own.
If you have any SCMS-unlimited source that you can copy by digital transfer
to your MD player, then, with the TOC trick that Martin Borus detailed on
<http://members.aol.com/borussylt/scms.htm>, you can make the first pass by
copying from the SCMS-unlimited source through a digital connection instead
of recording an analog signal. When you prevent the TOC update after the
second pass, the audio recorded in the second pass will be keyed as
SCMS-unlimited. Also, once you make any SCMS-unlimited MD, you can clone
its TOC to other MDs if you have a machine that can clone TOCs.
It chanced that a few CDs in my collection are SCMS-unlimited or have some
SCMS-unlimited tracks, so that was how I made SCMS-unlimited recordings
before getting a striper. (Why did I get a stripper if I could already make
SCMS-unlimited MD tracks? Because the other methods won't help for making
digital copies from SCMS-final CDs, which I figure may show up here before
long.)
