I bought an MZ-R1 when they were first released and used it for 2 months
before sending it back to Sony with a log of problems. It would frequently
lock-up and often 'lost' the last recording. Battery life was just 1 hr. It
was a large machine too, very heavy compared with modern versions.

I got a full refund and I bought a portable DAT instead. In fact I didn't
get back to Minidisc machines for another 5 years and they've improved
immensely since that first machine.

In my view, get the best modern model you can afford, pass on the MZ-R1.
