i was experiencing the same (NON UTOC) problem
with my Sharp 702. i started experiencing
drop-outs (pauses in playmode) after about 6
months of use. it then got worse: the MD would
emit little whirling/clunking sounds before
shutting off on its own, in record (analog or
digital) and/or play mode_ or it would take
forever to read the TOC.

i know i ~overuse~ my MD but still...

according to the tech, it's not unusual for the
'pickup' to go (akin to a CD player whose laser
head is getting cranky on you) as he's seen a few
units come back for repairs. i'm guessing there
can't be more than 100 people who own one in
Montreal, so that would still be a significant
amount... (but who am i to know). SharpCanada
replaced the pickup, wheel drive, and gear drive
of my MD, under full warranty.

maybe i was unlucky and happened to purchase a
'fragile' unit. i'm just hoping the 'dropout'
problem wont reappear... my warranty is over but
the repairs themselves are garanteed for 3 months.
at the first sign of a dropout, i'm bringing the
unit back. Now i'm starting to wonder whether or
not MD technology is indeed more reliable than CD.
It's a lot of cash to shell out for a fussy machine.
