ATRAC 1 had to trow away a fixed number of bits in each of it's three
frequency bands. Since ATRAC 3, this fixed number is variable.

ATRAC tends to trow away frequencies that are 'unhearable'. ATRAC 4 and up,
use a schema that tries to trow away noise. There's a lot of information
in a digital signal that is near impossible to hear for the 'normal'
human ear.

Jake, I believe you are one of the (un?)lucky ones that has the ability
to hear more detail than the average person. You like MD, but you can
'easily' hear it's MD to.
MD is made for the public. ATRAC has evolved into something that can't be
distignuished by the average human from real. This is what MD is about!

Cheers,
Ralph
