Joint Stereo lets you get a bit more compression by mixing parts of each
channel together; it can sound OK with straighforward pop etc. where the
left and right channels are almost identical, but can kill off the
soundstage with anything more complex.

If it sounds ok in Joint Stereo, you'd probably be better off recording in
mono and getting an even smaller filesize.
