No, this started off as a debate about trading MDs, to which the point was
argued that trading MDs which are copies of CDs is illegal... and off we all
went.

Actually, the issue covers recording in general, not just MD. I doubt you
will find anything that says you can't record your own stuff, that would
just be plain stupid. It would be illegal for an artist to ever record a CD
to sell in the first place if this were the case!

In this case you don't need an SCMS compliant device at all, actually it's a
hindrance as you are finding. You can copy your won work as much as like and
in any way you like - you are the copyright owner! You have the exclusive
right to copy!

Paying the tax for you recording your own stuff is stupid, but that's hard
luck, blame the people who keep breaking the law, it's their fault the tax
was ever added.
