I roughly recall hearing similar stories with a number of different units
so I don't believe it's something specific to the R30.  You should be able
to get it fixed at a Sony service center, but find out what the cost is gonna
be before you have it done.  That alone will tell you if it's time to buy
a new unit.

More than likely the cost of repair would be more or as bad as buying a 
brand new one, so you may want to start shopping around.
