I think that you might have more luck looking at why the market for the
latest high-tech items (or indeed, novelty items in general) is so deep in
Japan. US consumers tend to be fairly conservative when it comes to some
things, possible due to the whole Beta Video technology debacle, whereas in
Japan it seems that anything nifty and high-tech will sell enough to be
profitable. I would look for articles that talked about new electronics in
general, perhaps looking for articles that talk about the success that new
game consoles usually have in Japan.
