I'd have to disagree here ... in a "Live" performance situation
the venue or location does play an important part in the
perception of the music .. echo's, reverbs, delays, number of people
etc etc. All of these cannot be reproduced in your living room
with a standard 2 speaker setup. Yes you can get di-polar speakers
(like Mirage) to get a more 360 degree pattern of sound from the front
speakers, but how can you make it sound like a concert hall?

Traditionally the solution has been DSP's (for that hall, church, or
jazz club effect). I have heard some impressive results (I used to own a
Yamaha DSP1000 .. a serious piece of DSP hardware in it's time).
But they don't ever get it 100% right ... I also have some recordings
done in Dolby Pro-Logic and these are very interesting, quite "involving".

But ultimately the 5.1 solution would be the best for proper surround
listening. I have yet to find such a recording in 5.1 to listen to, and
the engineering behind such a project would be enormous.
Does anyone know of an existing 5.1 audio only recording ??

Yes I'm a diehard 2 speaker audiophile and have some magnificent Hi-Fi
stereo recordings, with great imaging, but if given the opportunity to
listen to a recording in proper 5.1 ... I'd give it a whirl !!

I friend of mine and I had an idea for recording a live concert in
surround using 2 MD recorders ... one in the general listening position
and a second machine further back capturing the delayed signal and
more crowd noise. Then all you need to do is take the rear stereo signal
turn it into dual mono (or record in mono in the first place and make 2 mono
channels) and make one channel 180 degrees out of phase.
That way the Pro-Logic decoder picks it up as the surround. (this part works
cause I've already been able to replicate this on my own system). Then
all you need to do is remix the front signal with the back at the right
levels. Presto your own Pro-Logic recording !!!!

I would really like to hear from anyone who has experimented or
contemplated experimenting doing this with MD. And their associated
results.

Cheers GC
