There are no hard data, but there seems to be additional small loss of
fidelity with each generation when ATRAC data are decompressed to S/PDIF and
recompressed with ATRAC. The greatest loss occurs in the first ATRACking, of
course.
People have said, I think, that the difference is noticeable by the twentieth
generation and unacceptable by the hundredth. I've personally gone out only
to thirteen generations, and the last one sounded the same as the first copy
to me. (I didn't have a stripper yet, but I had some SCMS-unlimited CD
tracks.)
