I can't comment on the 630 because it isn't a model that is offered in New
Zealand but I have the JE-520, which seems to be a very similar model.

As I understand it the 520 doesn't need an "end-search" function because it
automatically seeks the end of the recorded section of any MD and starts
recording there when you push record. if you want to record over an
existing track you either erase it first or pause it at the point where you
want to start overwriting and push record then. I think this is a brilliant
function, since it stops you accidentally wiping stuff you want to keep on
an MD.

Track Marks are reasonably easy on the 520, while recording you just push
the record button again and it marks a new track. Admittedly adding track
marks to a recorded MD is a little harder, you go through the edit menu to
divide and divide the track, a similar process using combine to remove track
marks. I agree this would be easier if there was a single track mark button
for use during playbank or record.

For synchro recording, there is a button on the remote, which I have to say
is about the size of the deck!

I don't know if these have been omitted on the 630 but I'd be surprised if
they had since it's a "step-up" model.

As a p.s. I have had the 520 for a year or so and it has proved to be easy
to use and super reliable, as well as recording good sound (ATRAC 4.5 I
think). I heard the 510 was plagued with problems but the 520, so far, has
been brilliant.

I just got one. The keyboard port is fantastic! Some of the
interface is not as slick as my R50 however. No end-search that I
have found. No simple way to place a track mark (R50 has dedicated
button for this). No simple way to delete a track (R50 has dedicated
button for this). Not as simple to synchro-record with an optically
connected Sony CD player. So in some ways Sony has failed to deliver
on the simple to use interface of the R50, but... it does have the
keyboard and digital level control..
