I thought this may be of interest to MD-L members (especially after the
lengthy thread about MP3/ATRAC encoding):

It's a 4-page article with extensive testing (scientific and listening) of
the Fraunhofer, Xing, LAME and Blade MP3 encoders. Although ArsTechnica is a
PC/tech review site, it's refreshing that they did serious listening tests
on proper hi-fi equipment (encoded samples were burned onto CD), rather than
the "MP3 sounds great on my PC speakers" approach of some that I've read.
Well worth a read.
